Australia and The Royal Newfoundland Regiment - from Herb Davis
Last Thursday, January 26th, I had the honour to be invited to the Australian National Day celebration which featured the film “The Water Diviner”.
When I greeted Australian High Commissioner Tony Negus in the receiving line, he proudly advised me that he was going to recognize the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in his official welcoming speech, which he did (see below).
"Tonight’s movie is the Australian Film….. The Water Diviner
The movie is set around the events of the now legendary ANZAC campaign at Gallipoli in WWI.
There is of course, a strong link for Canadians with the ANZAC story.
At the end of the epic 7 month battle and after massive losses on both sides,
The Newfoundland Regiment played a key role in evacuating the remaining allied troops onto waiting ships.
This rear-guard operation, meant that the Newfoundlanders were among the last Allied soldiers to leave the area.
Their bravery saved many lives and was one of the first of many battles where they fought with great distinction. “
